KANANASKIS COUNTRY – The first day of December spells annual road closures in Kananaskis Country.
Highway 40, from Peter Lougheed Provincial Park to Highwood House Junction – a section better known as the Highwood Pass – closed today (Dec. 1) and will reopen to vehicles June 14.
The Highwood Pass is said to be Canada’s highest paved road at an elevation of 2,206 metres above sea level. Each year, it closes for five-and-a-half months due to heavy snowfall events in the winter, making travel difficult and dangerous, and also to allow for the migration of wildlife.
Other seasonal closures taking effect in K-Country include Highway 66, west of Elbow Falls and the Powderface Trail; Highway 546, west of Sandy McNabb Campground; Powderface Road and Moose Mountain Road, until May 14.
Also closed for the winter season until April 30 are Highway 940, better known as the Forestry Trunk Road, from south of Cataract Creek and northwest of Plateau Mountain Road; Highway 532, between Highway 22 and the Forestry Trunk Road; and McLean Creek Road, south of the McLean staging access road, north of Fisher Creek.
Bow Valley Park Road, west of Middle Lake, was closed mid-October and will also re-open April 30.
