Dangerous avalanche conditions in the Rocky Mountains have closed the Trans-Canada Highway from Lake Louise all the way to Golden B.C.
Parks Canada officials said Monday (Jan. 13) a high to very dangerous avalanche condition required the closure between Lake Louise and Field and the highway further West to Golden is also closed, with only local traffic being let through eastbound to Field.
All other traffic is being redirected through Radium Hot Springs and the estimated time of reopening for the highway is 6 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 14) with low confidence.
"Our highway and visitor safety crews are working hard to reopen the highway in a timely and safe fashion, though crews are unable to conduct helicopter-assisted avalanche control at this time due to poor flying conditions caused by bad visibility and strong winds. Our team will attempt avalanche control as soon as conditions improve," said Parks Canada communications officer Omar McDadi in an email to the Outlook.

Backcountry travel is not recommended at this time. Visit www.avalanche.pc.gc.ca for more information on avalanche conditions in the mountain parks.
