Banff 25th anniversary in 2015

The Town of Banff is officially 25 years old on Jan. 1, 2015, but what exactly will happen to celebrate that date is still uncertain.

The Town of Banff is officially 25 years old on Jan. 1, 2015, but what exactly will happen to celebrate that date is still uncertain.

Councillor Chip Olver mentioned the significant birthday during budget deliberations and even floated the idea of adding a project.

Olver said the 20th anniversary went by without recognition as the community and municipality were in tight financial constraints.

“We felt it really wasn’t appropriate to have a celebration that year because of that, but we verbally said at that time we would support something at 25 years,” she said. “I think a lovely way and lasting way to celebrate our 25th anniversary would be a piece of art.”

But it was a topic that came up in front of council in a presentation of the public art committee prior, a meeting Olver was not able to attend.

Mayor Karen Sorensen said the committee is considering a project to commemorate the establishment of the municipality and will return with a recommendation. She said the public art reserve has $90,000 in it, so a motion to add funds to the budget was not necessary.

“I do not intend to add anything to this operational budget,” said the mayor.
