Public safety concerns over multiple black bears feeding near Lac Des Arc have forced an area closure.

Alberta Parks posted the closure at the Lac Des Arcs Campground and Day-Use Area on Monday (Aug. 22) and it will remain in tact until further notice.

The boat launch at the Lac des Arcs lake and access road to the boat launch will remain open.

The bruins are feeding on vegetation near the lake shore as they begin to plump up for hibernation in the fall, said Jill Sawyer, communications officer for Alberta Parks.

“It’ s a very popular area for bears,” said Sawyer. “There has been an warning advisory for a few months and this closure just occurred (Monday).”

Those who had reservations at the campsite this week were individually contacted by Alberta Parks and will be relocated to nearby campgrounds or reimbursed.

The Hamlet of Lac Des Arcs is approximately 15 kilometres east of Canmore.
