CANMORE - A curious black bear caused quite a stir on Thursday night after it nearly wandered into the entrance of the Lodges at Canmore.

According to staff from the resort, the black bear walked through the first set of doors, which were propped open, before getting spooked and turning around.

"It came in the first set where the mail boxes and the brochures are," said Jacqui Cates, guest services manager.

Fortunately for both the bear and hotel staff, a second set of doors stopped the bear in its tracks.

"It sounds like he came up from the traffic circle tried to get into our garbage room, but our garbage room is gated and lock, poked his head into the doors and then took off the other way," said Cates.

After leaving the condominium hotel she said the bear headed toward Solara Resort, which is located next door on Bow Valley Trail.

Staff immediately called Alberta Fish and Wildlife to report the incident. Several phone calls to provincial agency were not immediately returned.
