A 63-year-old Calgary man drowned in the Bow River at Seebe Dam, Sunday (Aug. 18).

At about 3 p.m., Canmore RCMP received a call that a male required assistance near the dam.

According to RCMP, it appeared that a male in his sixties was swimming with friends near the dam. As he exited the water, he fell back into the river and was taken downstream by the current.

He was located by friends and attempts were made to revive him. Due to the remoteness of the location, he and his friends were extricated by helicopter and were met by paramedics who were unsuccessful at reviving him.

The man died on scene.

Rescue and recovery efforts were conducted and assisted by Kananaskis Emergency Services and Stoney Nakoda EMS.

“The 63-year-old male and three friends were jumping off cliffs into the Bow River, and it sounds like the victim may have injured himself while jumping,” said Kananaskis Country public safety specialist Burke Duncan. “Friends pulled him out, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Duncan added at least two conservation officers were also present at the scene.

The man’s name is being withheld at this time. Canmore RCMP is still investigating the incident, but foul play is not suspected.
