Bus had new engine installed before fire

A Banff Roam bus that burst into flames last week while in operation had a refurbished engine installed just six weeks before.

Bow Valley Regional Transit chair Sean Krausert said the elk wrapped bus was totaled in the fire and the cause is still under investigation.

“It is believed the fire started in the area of the engine cavity, but it is still not known what the cause is,” he said, adding Banff’s fire department, the insurance adjustor and manufacturer are all investigating. “It had received a new, rebuilt engine six weeks prior.”

Krausert said Roam buses are serviced on a regular basis and the bus that caught fire was serviced four days prior to the fire on Dec. 2 and no problems were noticed at that time.

“In an abundance of precaution, all other buses have been brought in for a complete and thorough examination of anything or anything related to engine cavity and no problems discovered,” he said.

Because the Banff local Roam service operates two routes in winter as opposed to three in summer, Krausert said there are enough buses to maintain service levels.

“It is business as usual despite this terrible event.”
