CANMORE - The number of warnings and tickets issued by Canmore's bylaw services increased by 38 per cent in 2017, according to statistics provided to council on May 8.

A total of 1,316 warnings and tickets were related to road use and parking.

According to the department's year-end report, 698 tickets were issued for traffic and road use infractions, while 124 tickets were issued under the Traffic Safety Act.

Bylaw officers also issued 114 warnings and handed out 40 tickets under the town's animal control bylaw thanks to a renewed focus on patrolling the town's trails and parks.

"One of our intentions has been to try to be more visible in the community, take a more community-oriented enforcement approach," said Michael Orr, supervisor of bylaw services, during a committee of the whole meeting on May 8.

To do that, bylaw services increased its patrol numbers by 28 per cent in 2017.

With the increase in patrols, Orr said bylaw officers were able to increase their presence in the town's parks and trails, resulting in the 114 warnings and 40 tickets issued under the town's animal control bylaw.

"We've heard concerns about things like off leash dogs and stuff like that, so we've taken much more of an approach to try and be on trails, to try and be in parks, to try and address this," said Orr.

He said his department also focused a lot of its time and attention on parking infractions in the downtown core; more than doubling the number of parking tickets it handed out compared to 2016. According to the report, 72 per cent of all downtown time limit parking tickets were issued to residents of Canmore.

Bylaw officers also handed out 40 tickets and three warnings in relation to Canmore's land use bylaw.
