A 53-year-old Calgary man is dead after a fall at Grassi Lakes in Canmore over the weekend.

Canmore RCMP Sgt. Ryan Currie said on Saturday (July 2) at approximately 10:45 a.m. they were called to assist EMS near Grassi Lakes.

He said a 53-year-old man from Calgary appears to have been walking along Highway 742 in the Whiteman’s Pass area above the climbing cliffs near the popular hiking destination when he fell and sustained injuries.

“It looks like he walked along the guardrail and we can’t really say where he was exactly when he fell,” Currie said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services. RCMP continue to investigate the death with the Chief Medical Examiner’s office and it is unknown what factors, if any, contributed to the accident.

Currie added they do not believe the death is suspicious in nature.
