Canmore Rotarians launched a fundraising campaign this week in support of the community of Fort McMurray, devastated by a massive wild fire.

Lawrence Nyman, treasurer of the club’s charitable foundation, reminds everyone it was just three years ago when the Bow Valley was hard hit by flooding and that people throughout Alberta donated over $880,000 to help in recovery.

“Now it’s our turn,” said Nyman. “In 2013, Canmore Rotarians were the local experts who could determine how and where donations could be used to provide maximum benefit to the community.

“Now we are reaching out to the Rotarians of Fort McMurray, who will be our local experts, to get money donated to the places it is needed as quickly as possible.”

It took just over a year, Nyman said, to get all of the donated money for the Bow Valley into useful action. We are hopeful, he said, that a similar result can be achieved in Fort McMurray through the knowledge and expertise of Rotarians in that devastated community.

The Canmore club will work with the two Rotary Clubs in Fort McMurray, as well as other local organizations identified by them, to maximize the use of donations.

Tax-deductible donations to the Canmore Rotary Club Charitable Foundation for Fort McMurray can be made online at ww.rotaryclubofcanmore.ca/charitablefoundation by clicking on the Donate Now button and then select Fort McMurray Relief Fund Project.

Each dollar donated online will be matched by 15 per cent by ATB Financial. Donations by cheque can also be mailed to the Canmore Rotary Club Charitable Foundation at P.O. Box 8025, Canmore, AB, T1W 2T8. Mark Fort McMurray Relief Fund in the memo area of the cheque.
