Canmore takes home two Alto Awards

Canmore’s tourism efforts over the last year received a big boost this week with two Alberta Tourism award wins.

Canmore’s tourism efforts over the last year received a big boost this week with two Alberta Tourism award wins.

Canmore Business and Tourism took top place in the province for Collaborative Tourism and Tourism Media for Canmore Uncorked and a feature article in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Minister of Culture and Tourism Maureen Kubinec presented the awards, also called Altos, during a ceremony on Monday (Oct. 20) in Banff.

“Congratulations to all Alto Award winners and finalists,” said Kubinec. “These innovative tourism businesses continue to drive the economy of this province.”

CBT President Andrew Nickerson was thrilled by the awards and the recognition it is for the work CBT has been doing as Canmore’s destination marketing organization.

“We were very hopeful we would win,” he said. “We put in submissions for each of the past three years at the Altos and we have had one nomination in the past.

“This shows just how much Canmore has worked and partners have worked in terms of getting us on the map.”

The Collaborative Tourism award was a first for the Alto event, and when it was announced as a category last year, Nickerson said CBT immediately identified it as something they wanted to win. He said the success of Canmore Uncorked was due to the collaboration in the restaurant industry of the community.

Jill Anderson penned the article Canmore’s Can-Do Spirit for the San Fransisco Chronicle, which won in the Media category.

“It shows our ability to tell great stories about just how great Canmore is as a destination and as a real authentic community,” Nickerson said.

Other local nominations were Conseil de développement économique de l’Alberta, for La Petite Seduction TV Show in the Marketing Partnership categoty, the Banff Canoe Club in the Sustainable Tourism category, and Banff Lake Louise Tourism for its Ski.com Facebook campaign in the Marketing Excellence $10,000 to $50,000 category.
