A man is dead after falling out of a canoe on Moraine Lake in Banff National Park on Monday (July 18).

Lake Louise RCMP said an adult male from Saskatoon, Sask. was canoeing alone just before 4 p.m. when he fell into the glacier-fed lake.

Other canoeists spotted him in the water and then rushed the unresponsive male to shore where CPR was initiated.

The man was transported to a Banff EMS team and later pronounced dead.

Lake Louise RCMP are investigating the incident.

“We’ re still going through witnesses statements, so it's hard to say if he was wearing a life jacket,” said Sgt. Alan Vanthuyne. “When the lodge rents out canoes, life jackets are given, but what happens beyond that depends on the renters.”

The man’ s next of kin have been notified.

The investigation will continue with the assistance of the Office of the Medical Examiner.

RCMP, Lake Louise Fire and Rescue and Parks Canada responded to the incident.

Moraine Lake is approximately 15 kilometres south of Lake Louise.

The Outlook will update the story when more information becomes available.
