Improvements to Canmore’s Centennial Park have come in over budget.
The work, which includes installation of adult exercise equipment, has resulted in an extra $84,000 of work that needs to be paid for.
But the municipality is not on the hook for the whole amount, according to manager of engineering Kevin Van Vliet.
Van Vliet told council Tuesday (Dec. 21) an additional $47,000 is needed from the Town to pay the contractor for additional work completed during the project.
He said there are times when administration knows beforehand that a project budget is insufficient and there are times when unexpected costs arise during construction.
“Sometimes there are unknowns and changes,” he said. “Unfortunately, on this project, we did not have enough construction contingency.”
But because the Town partnered with the Canmore and Area Health Care Foundation, which received grant funding for the adult exercise equipment, the total cost is shared.
Van Vliet added that $14,000 of work was done on behalf of the Canadian Rockies Public School division.
The total project budget was $615,000 before the $84,000 was added.
