A semi driver has been charged after losing control of his vehicle last night (Nov. 12) near Lake Louise, which blocked traffic for hours on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Police have charged Sarabjit Kalkat of B.C. with failing to ascertain sufficient space for movement under section 9(a) of the use of the highway rules of road regulations. Sgt. Jeff Campbell with the Lake Louise RCMP said there was no lawful reason for the driver to go into the ditch.

“(…) Due to his manner of driving he lost control and jackknifed the semi, putting it in the ditch that would be semi blocking both east bound lanes of the Trans-Canada,” Campbell said. “There was no reason for him to have lost control in the area that he did.”

No injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved in the accident, however, commercial vehicles were halted for approximately four hours before east bound lanes reopened at approximately 9 p.m. Passenger vehicles were rerouted onto Highway 1A.

Police say alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
