Cocaine possession lands Canmore man in jail

A Canmore man will spend the next 16 months behind bars after pleading guilty to possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

A Canmore man will spend the next 16 months behind bars after pleading guilty to possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Darcy Gordon Humphries entered a plea of guilty to the one charge in front of Judge Peter Barley in Canmore Provincial Court last Wednesday (Feb. 22).

Crown prosecutor R. Jeremy Newton told court that Humphries was the subject of surveillance by the RCMP from October 2013 to May 2014.

“A member of the Canmore RCMP received information from a confidential source that Mr. Humphries was actively involved in trafficking cocaine from his residence,” Newton said.

On May 9, 2014 a warrant to search the residence was executed, according to the Crown, and Humphries was arrested with 4.6 grams of cocaine in five bags. He also had in his possession a scale, score sheet, and a large amount of cash, according to the submitted facts.

Newton said the range appropriate for consideration is 18 to 24 months, however, a joint submission for a 16-month sentence was made because of the fact that the accused lived under strict release conditions for the two previous years and he does not have a related criminal record.

Defence counsel Ian Savage told the judge that the 42 year old is a Canmore resident who has worked as a framer for a number of years.

“He succumbed unfortunately to the monetary enrichment that comes from this type of activity and is now paying the heavy price of incarceration,” Savage said.

Two additional criminal charges against Humprhies – possession for the purpose and possession of the proceeds of crime – were withdrawn after the guilty plea.

Michael Cunningham was also charged as a result of the search warrant, however his charges were put over to March 8 to take the next step.
