Cochrane teens found safe

Two Cochrane teens who ran away from home were located safe and sound in Canmore on Monday (June 5).

Two Cochrane teens who ran away from home were located safe and sound in Canmore on Monday (June 5).

The search for the teens involved the Calgary Police Service’s helicopter – known as HAWCS or helicopter air watch for community safety – which circled parts of Canmore in the early evening leaving some wondering what exactly was happening.

Canmore RCMP Sgt. Ryan Currie said the helicopter was assisting local members as well as Kananaskis Public Safety staff with a search of the area along the Bow River.

Currie said the search resulted from a report to Cochrane RCMP from parents of the two teenaged girls that were missing.

“There was concern for their wellbeing,” Currie said.

Cochrane RCMP were informed by the parents that the girls were in the Canmore area and that is when the search began, which included a river search by boat by Kananaskis Public Safety.

“The girls were located in a tent and arrested under the mental health act and escorted to Calgary to be with their families,” said Currie, adding the pair had set up a camp in the woods near the Engine Bridge.
