A “dangerous dog” warning has been issued at Mount Yamnuska Trail and Day use area until further notice.

A “dangerous dog” warning has been issued at Mount Yamnuska Trail and Day use area until further notice.

The dog, described as a 140-pound Great Dane and black lab cross named Kona, was reported lost in the east end of the Yamnuska traverse on Saturday (Oct. 15).

Yamnuska is approximately 20 kilometres east of Canmore, off Highway 1A.

The public is advised to not approach or call to the dog, keep pets on a leash and carry bear spray, make sure it’ s easily accessible, and know how to use it.

The dog was declared “vicious” by the City of Calgary, according to Alberta Parks.

The City of Calgary defines a “vicious animal” as having chased, injured or bitten any other animal or human, damaged or destroyed any public or private property, or threatened or created the reasonable apprehension of a threat to a human and presents a threat of serious harm to other animals or humans.

Canmore RCMP Sgt. Ryan Currie said there have not been any reports the dog has bitten anyone while it has been lost.

He added the RCMP is trying to confirm the dog’ s designation from Calgary or the province, but the public should follow the warning guides “until we know exactly what were dealing with.”

The public is urged to report all sightings to Kananaskis Dispatch (403-591-7755) or Canmore RCMP (403-678-5516).

The Outlook will update when more information becomes available.
