A driver was hospitalized with serious injuries after plowing into the east gate of Banff National Park and causing extensive damage to a kiosk – considered a federal heritage structure.

A 32-year-old Calgary man, and lone occupant in the vehicle, was taken to Canmore Hospital on Sunday (Aug. 30) evening, then to Calgary Foothills Medical Centre, said Banff RCMP Cpl. Chris Kosack. The extent of the man’s injuries is unknown at this time.

Police are still investigating and Kosack said speed was a factor, but right now it does not appear alcohol played a role.

The vehicle hit the front corner of the lane one kiosk at approximately 8:15 p.m.

Parks Canada would not provide a spokesperson to comment on the accident, but in an email officials said there was substantial damage to the stone base and wooden framing of the building.

“The damaged stone has been removed and an assessment of repairs is currently underway,” said Christina Tricomi in the statement.

“The Lane 1 kiosk is a historic building as it is part of the original East Gate Complex for Banff National Park. Any repairs to the historic structure would respect and maintain its heritage character values.”
