Drunk driver charges up this season

The number of drivers charged this holiday season saw a dramatic increase over the previous year. The Bow Valley RCMP Detachments and Integrated Traffic Unit is reporting a 120 per cent increase this past December over the same period in 2009.

The number of drivers charged this holiday season saw a dramatic increase over the previous year.

The Bow Valley RCMP Detachments and Integrated Traffic Unit is reporting a 120 per cent increase this past December over the same period in 2009.

In total, 22 impaired drivers were arrested in Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise this holiday season, compared to 10 during the same time in 2009.

In addition, 10 drivers were issued 24-hour driving suspensions.

Sixteen Alberta Checkstop initiatives stopped 11 drivers, while the others were arrested during random patrols and complaints from the public.

The RCMP would like to remind the public that if you see a driver you believe to be impaired please call 911 to report the driver.
