Elderly U.S. hiker dies in K-Country

The body of an elderly U.S. man was found Sunday (Aug. 17) on a challenging Kananaskis hiking trail near Mt. Allen.

Kananaskis RCMP believe freezing temperatures overnight on Centennial Ridge Trail contributed in the death of an 86 year old from Ohio.

Cpl. Michael Magee says he was hiking the trail alone and was unresponsive when found by other hikers. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It had snowed overnight in K-Country and temperatures dropped to around -3 or -4 C, said Magee.

The man’s family told RCMP he was an “avid outdoorsman” and travelled to Canada alone.

The trail head starts near the Dead Man’s Flats area and, according to Alberta Parks’ website, the trail is approximately 16 kilometres to Highway 40 and back.
