KANANASKIS - The family of a 58-year-old Calgary man who died while hiking in the backcountry in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park has identified him as Todd Sparks.

According to his family, he was on a popular hiking trail with the "little brother" he mentored when we slipped and fell on June 3. They were approximately 30 minutes from returning to the parking lot when the accident happened.

Police said he stumbled on snow and ice near Rawson Lake when he fell approximately 50 feet to his death around 3:45 p.m.

"It is with immense sadness, sorrow and beyond belief that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father, son, brother, friend, and colleague," the family stated in an obituary published online. "Todd lit up the world with his generosity, laughter, storytelling and care for others."

He is survived by his two daughters and his wife, as well as a large extended family.

"He truly loved mountainous landscapes through skiing, hiking and golfing but most importantly, he was a man of kindness and generosity. Todd gave a mountain of love to his daughters, family and friends."
