Traffic is down to one lane east of Lac Des Arcs, as crews work to remove wreckage from fatal collision early Thursday morning (July 6).
RCMP and EMS confirmed one man is dead and two men were transported to Calgary Foothills Medical Centre after an eastbound semi-tractor trailer collided with a semi parked on the shoulder of the Trans-Canada Highway.
“A patrolling member of the Canmore RCMP witnessed a collision between semi- tractor trucks,” stated a Canmore RCMP press release.
“The impact caused an immediate explosion and subsequent fire.”
Canmore and Nakoda EMS responded to the incident about three kilometres east of Lac Des Arcs at approximately 12:20 a.m.
The presumed driver of the parked semi was declared dead on scene.
The passenger, in his 40s, was ejected from the parked semi, and the driver of the other semi, in his 30s, both suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The age of the deceased male is not known to EMS.
Westbound lanes are open and eastbound traffic is down to one lane as of 10 a.m. pending investigation and removal of debris.
RCMP are investigating the factors leading to this collision.
