Firearm charges hand man five-month sentence

A 32-year-old Stoney Nakoda man was sentenced to five months in jail following a guilty plea to several firearm charges.

Sedrick Powderface, from Morley, plead guilty on Dec. 10 to pointing a firearm and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, possession of a firearm when prohibited by a court order, and two counts of breach of release conditions from a prior charge still before the courts.

Powderface was given a $600 fine on top of the sentence.

Still before the courts are charges from an alleged domestic assault on Powderface’s common law wife, and another female on Sept. 29.

The trial date has been scheduled for Jan. 7, 2016 at Cochrane Provincial Court.

Cochrane RCMP said it is allege that a firearm was produced during the Sept. 29 incident and was discharged after the common law wife and children “fled the residence.”

RCMP arrested Powderface later that day. He was found in possession of a hunting rifle and ammunition, according to RCMP.

Man arrested for armed robbery

A 30-year-old Stoney Nakoda man has been arrested for armed robbery.

Avery Hunter allegedly produced a knife and stole a firearm from a 76-year-old man from Cochrane on Dec. 1.

The man had been hunting on Stoney Nakoda land and had agreed to sell the firearm, but then “backedout of the deal,” according to Cochrane RCMP.

The two are known to each other.

On Dec. 3, Cochrane RCMP executed a warrant to arrest Hunter for robbery.

Avery Hunter made his first court appearance on Dec. 15 at Cochrane Provincial Court.
