Police are investigating an incident on Monday (Dec. 16) involving a vehicle fleeing RCMP through downtown Canmore.
Police say the driver failed to stop after a traffic act infraction – an expired plate – and sped away around 2:30 p.m. Police tracked the silver Dodge Neon to a 3rd Avenue and Willow Pointe residence in Canmore. The vehicle was abandoned after the suspect ripped off the rear licence plate and fled on foot across a frozen creek and into the Spring Creek area.
No injuries or damages have been reported.
Canmore RCMP Sgt. Ryan Currie said police know who the male suspect is, but no further information will be released until the suspect can be contacted and questioned.
“We have a suspect in mind, but we don’t exactly know who was driving or if he was in charge of the vehicle at the time; it’s still very much under investigation,” said Currie.
The vehicle rushed westbound down 10th Street and made a shaky turn onto 6th Avenue, narrowly avoiding parked vehicles. The vehicle raced through a busy Main Street intersection and through the Lawrence Grassi school zone, allegedly at speeds up to 80 km/h, according to a police scanner.
The vehicle was towed shortly after being abandoned.
Currie says there are still a few people they need to speak with.
