A nine-year-old girl has died due to injuries sustained in a skiing accident on Sunday (Dec. 6) at a popular Kananaskis Country slope.
Alberta Alpine confirmed the young skier’ s death in a release on Tuesday (Dec. 8).
The skier, a member of the U10+ Mt. Allen Ski Team, was rushed to Alberta’ s Children’ s Hospital after being found alone, unconscious and unresponsive, at Nakiska Ski Resort‘s Mt. Allan, off Highway 40.
“The athlete was skiing with her group on ‘Homesteader’ when it is believed that the athlete lost control and hit a tree off the main trail,” the Alberta Alpine release stated. “It was with shock and great sadness that we learned of the athlete’ s passing at Children’ s Hospital on Sunday afternoon.”
Alberta Health Services said emergency crews “aggressively” treated the patient upon arrival at the scene and moved her to the resort’ s medical facility.
STARS air ambulance lifted her to the Calgary hospital.
Further information about the girl was not released.
“Sadly, our sport is not without some inherent dangers. Every day the staff and volunteers at Alberta Alpine work with our member ski clubs and teams to reduce risk and increase participant safety,” the release stated.
“Every single day we work to ensure our children are participating in the safest possible manner.”
