Heuer named enviro crusader

He’s hoofed it from Yellowstone to the Yukon, followed caribou on a northern migration and paddled across the country with his wife and son, and championed wildlife and the environment in boardrooms as executive director with Y2Y.

He’s hoofed it from Yellowstone to the Yukon, followed caribou on a northern migration and paddled across the country with his wife and son, and championed wildlife and the environment in boardrooms as executive director with Y2Y.

For all these reasons, Karsten Heuer was voted Best Enviro Crusader Canmore for the Outlook’s 2015 Best of the Bow awards.

“It’s a great honour to be recognized,” said Heuer. “But the bottom line is it takes a huge group to do the right thing. Groups and individuals need to speak out.”

While Heuer has gone above and beyond in crusading for wildlife and the environment, he said it’s important for people to realize they can’t rely on others to speak for them.

“People shouldn’t think one or two voices is enough. People need to exercise their democratic rights and they can’t assume others will represent them. People need to continue to raise their concerns.”

While Heuer has seen much, much more of Canada and the U.S. than most, including up close and personal with boots on or paddle in hand, he said home in Canmore holds great meaning.

“I’m honoured to live in a valley where people value wildlife and to live in a place that’s still pretty wild. There aren’t many places where you can share your space with a grizzly.

“But that won’t keep going without everyone working together in support of wildlife and the environment.”
