A 50-year-old man was arrested for impaired driving after hitting a school bus head on near Castle Junction on Jan. 19.

At about 6:30 a.m., the driver of the vehicle pulled out of the Taylor Lake parking lot heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway.

According to RCMP, the empty school bus was heading to Lake Louise to pick up students when the driver saw the vehicle travelling toward her on the wrong side of the highway about two kilometres east of the Taylor Lake pullout.

The driver of the vehicle hit the bus head on and was taken to hospital where he was subsequently arrested for impaired driving. The bus driver was also taken to hospital with minor injuries and released later that day.

“She did everything right,” said Cindy Mueller, transportation manger for the Canadian Rockies Public School division.

Mueller declined to comment further as the matter is still under investigation.

The driver of the vehicle will appear in Canmore Provincial Court on Feb. 28.
