Liberals holding events in Canmore

Federal Liberal members of parliament will be on hand this Friday (Feb. 4) in Canmore for a town hall meeting with the community.

Federal Liberal members of parliament will be on hand this Friday (Feb. 4) in Canmore for a town hall meeting with the community.

MPs Bob Rae, Martha Hall-Findlay and Carolyn Bennett will all be on hand for an open mic question session from the floor.

Wildrose Liberal riding association president Jenn Turcott said the event is part of a cross-country series of town halls being held by Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff.

Turcott said the town hall meeting is to promote the openness and transparency of the party and take unprompted questions from Canadians on all topics.

“This is for residents of the Wildrose riding to ask members of parliament about any questions and concerns,” she said. “It is not every day the Liberal Party can have MPs out in rural Alberta, it is nice to have this opportunity.”

While not able to attend on Friday himself, Ignatieff and additional federal Liberal MPs will be on hand all day Saturday at the Radisson for a special meeting of the Liberal Party of Canada’s provincial association.

Turcott said the special meeting is meant to get Alberta Liberal members excited and ready for when an election is called.

“We all know we are in a minority government and we do not know when the next election will occur,” she said.

Having access to great convention facilities in a beautiful, picturesque place like Canmore, said Turcott, inspired the party to hold the event here.

Saturday’s events are also open to the public, but includes a delegate fee. Alternatively, the public is welcome to attend the luncheon at 11:30 a.m. for $50 when Ignatieff will give a speech.

Tickets are also available for an evening dinner and keynote address by Bob Rae.
