Man fined for going nearly double the speed limit

A Vancouver man was ordered to pay a $2,000 fine and spend 45 days without his drivers licence after pleading guilty to speeding under the Traffic Safety Act.

Michael Huang was pulled over by RCMP in Banff National Park on July 30, 2017, according to Crown prosecutor Britta Kristensen.

Kristensen said Huang was travelling at a speed of 174 km/h – nearly double the 90 km/h speed zone through the park.

Huang’s lawyer, Dale Fedorchuk, entered a guilty plea in Canmore Provincial Court in front of Judge Marian De Souza, who was appointed to the bench at the end of last year.

While Huang was charged with dangerous operation under the criminal code, in addition to speeding and careless driving, Fedorchuk indicated the guilty plea was to careless driving and, as a result of an agreed resolution with the Crown, the other charges were withdrawn. He still, however, is charged with possession of a controlled substance for being in possession of cannabis at the time of the traffic stop.

That charge was referred to the federal Crown’s office for potential resolution through the alternative measures program.

De Souza agreed to the $2,000 fine, a $300 victim fine surcharge and a 45-day driving prohibition.
