Those wanting more time to consider the Municipal Development Plan before it goes to public hearing have had their wish granted – albeit for an entirely different reason.
Canmore council was set to hold a public hearing Tuesday (March 8) at 6 p.m. on the statutory planning document at the Civic Centre.
However, organizers of community celebrations occurring during the Ski Tour Canada cross-country world cup event scheduled a whole slate of events that evening in the Civic Centre plaza – including remarks from Mayor John Borrowman, live music and medal presentations.
As a result, manager of planning Alaric Fish asked council to reschedule the public hearing to March 22 at 6 p.m. instead due to the “unforeseen” scheduling conflict.
“We had not realized there is also an event planned for outside the Civic Centre that will involve hopefully a fairly robust celebration and we feel the compatibility of those two events is not that great,” Fish said.
There has been some criticism in the community about the timing of the public hearing for the Municipal Development Plan being too soon after the document received first reading from council in February.
