Two people were taken to hospital with minor injuries following a chain reaction of accidents this afternoon (Jan. 2) on the TransCanada Highway west of Banff.
Police are investigating five separate incidents involving nine vehicles in both east and westbound lanes of the TCH, including a single vehicle rollover a few kilometres east of Highway 93 at around 2:30 p.m.
Only minor injuries occurred, said Lake Louise RCMP Sgt. Jeff Campbell At the scene he could only confirm that a man and woman had been taken to hospital, but said up to four could have been taken for precautionary measures.
Minor snow flurries and slick driving conditions may have been factors in the accidents.
Campbell said a westbound vehicle drove into the median ditch and rolled over. As two vehicles stopped so motorists could check on the driver, one of them was rear-ended, immobilizing both vehicles on the highway.
Three separate collisions occurred with eastbound traffic just a few hundred feet away as six vehicles were involved in rear-end collisions, as multiple vehicles slid into the ditch.
Four EMS ambulances were on scene, as well as Banff and Lake Louise RCMP and Lake Louise Fire and Rescue.
East and westbound TCH lanes were moving, traffic was being delayed.
