A critically injured male motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital after a two-vehicle accident on Highway 1A east of Canmore, Monday (Sept. 7).
Canmore RCMP said while both vehicles were travelling eastbound, a 59-year-old Edmonton motorcyclist rear-ended a vehicle with three passengers east of Grotto Pond.
The motorcyclist suffered severe head injuries, considered life threatening, and was transported to Calgary Foothills Medical Centre by STARS air ambulance around 5:40 p.m.
The passengers in the vehicle - a man, woman and child from Calgary, were uninjured.
The driver, who wished to remain anonymous, said it seemed like the motorcyclist didn’ t even realize their vehicle was there when the collision occurred.
“I don’ t know how he didn’ t see me,” the driver said, adding the trio was driving home from a day trip to Canmore’ s Grassi Lakes.
Police said it is unclear what lead to the accident and the investigation continues. RCMP said the rider was wearing a helmet and that road and weather conditions have been ruled out as factors.
Both lanes of the highway were closed for nearly two hours, but have since re-opened.
The Outlook will update the story when more information becomes available.
