New bridge in place for fall

Cougar Creek crossings by cyclists and pedestrians will return with the installation of another pedestrian bridge this summer.

Cougar Creek crossings by cyclists and pedestrians will return with the installation of another pedestrian bridge this summer.

The bridge will be the second along the creek between Elk Run Boulevard and the Trans-Canada Highway after council approved spending $425,000 of disaster recovery funding for the project.

It will be in the same location as the bridge was before the flood last June, which was relocated downstream next to the highway.

Engineering intern Katherine Clark told council people traversing the creek bed, which is now covered in articulated concrete mats, is a safety concern and the second bridge will provide a safe crossing.

She also said the new bridge will be higher above the creek channel than before – six metres as opposed to 4.5 metres and will have a similar look to the previous bridge.

Council was happy to support the motion unanimously, noting how important having that connection back will be to the community.

“I am very much looking forward to reconnecting to that part of the community by foot and especially for the younger kids going to Elizabeth Rummel Elementary School,” said Councillor Sean Krausert.
