Canmore council has appointed Linda Goddard as its new RCMP public complaints director.

Council made the appointment at its final meeting of 2011 as recommended by its police committee.

Committee chair Paul Reeves said the position has been vacant since August and five applications were received and reviewed.

“The public complaints director is a volunteer whose primary responsibility is to provide customer service related to questions and inquiries on matters related to the police services (RCMP) to the community,” Reeves said.

“The public complaints director can receive, forward and monitor complaints filed by the public and act as an intermediary between the RCMP detachment and an aggrieved member of the public as required.”

Since the position was created, he said, it has handled four complaints and funding to train the new director is provided by Alberta’s Solicitor General’s office, which created and recommended municipalities establish the position.
