One dead after grim head-on collision east of Canmore

An 86-year-old Calgary woman was killed in a horrific crash between mini van and semi-truck on Highway 1 on Monday (Aug. 24) near Morley.

An 86-year-old Calgary woman was killed in a horrific crash between mini van and semi-truck on Highway 1 on Monday (Aug. 24) near Morley.

Cochrane RCMP say two young passengers are in hospital - a 14-year-old male with serious injuries, and an 11-year-old female with minor injuries. RCMP say the extent of their injuries are unknown at this time. The driver of the van, a 48-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries.

The semi driver and passenger, a 44-year-old Grande Prairie man, and 37-year-old Delta, B.C., man, were taken to Calgary Foothills Medical Centre with minor injuries.

Initial reports are the westbound semi-truck crossed the grassy median and struck the eastbound mini van just west of Scott Lake Hill.

STARS air ambulance was called to the emergency scene at 1:40 p.m.

Both eastbound traffic lanes were closed until after 10 p.m. Traffic was being diverted from the Trans-Canada to Highway 1A.
