A 53-year-old female is dead and a 55-year-old male is in critical condition after being struck by a tour bus on Wednesday (Sept. 21) near Castle Mountain viewpoint in Banff National Park.
Suffering life-threatening injuries, the man was taken to Calgary Foothills Medical Centre by STARS air ambulance this morning.
According to Banff RCMP, at just after 10 a.m., two people, both from Ontario, were struck by a tour bus as it rolled forward and down a steep embankment into the Bow River at the Castle Mountain viewpoint, west of Banff townsite on Highway 1.
“Both victims were down on the shore right next to the river and one was deceased on the scene. The other one was treated by EMS and eventually transported to the Banff hospital and sequentially (transferred by) STARS to Calgary,” said Cpl. Chris Blandford.
“The bus had rolled forward on its own, there was nobody in the bus at the time. The two victims were standing in front of the bus as it rolled forward and were essentially taken down to the bottom of the bank by the bus.”
No one else is believed to have been injured during this incident, according to RCMP.
