The federal government has announced funds for the Town of Canmore to develop a pickleball court.

Wildrose Member of Parliament Blake Richards made the grant funding announcement last Friday (May 25) as part of the New Horizons for Seniors Program.

While $14,256 will go to developing a pickleball court, an additional $25,000 was announced for the Canmore and Area Health Care Foundation’s purchase of a new handibus.

“This is the final piece of the puzzle for a new seniors handibus that was badly needed,” Richards said. “This is just one way as a deferral government we can support organizations that provide quality of life for seniors.”

Gary Montgomery, chair of the hospital foundation, expressed appreciation for the funding, which is the last bit needed to pay for the new bus.

“Our previous vehicle was barely usable and this new funding will allow us to continue assisting seniors with their medical and social transport needs,” Montgomery said.

Deputy mayor Gordie Miskow said he is happy to see another recreational opportunity be developed in Canmore and one that promotes active living for an older population.

“Seniors are the backbone of our community and Canada,” he said. “We will be working together with our stakeholders to make sure we meet the needs of the community.”

While the pickleball money is approved, a location for the racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis has not been finalized.

Originally proposed for the Veteran’s Park tennis courts, there has been push back from the tennis community.

Manager of Recreation Chris Hay said he is working with stakeholder groups to evaluate options and hopes to be back before council for approval before the summer break.

“There a a couple sites that we feel will best support pickleballers,” he said.
