Province putting more funds into seniors housing for the valley

Just as it is about to break ground on new seniors housing units, Bow Valley Regional Housing is celebrating a $6 million commitment by the provincial government for phase two of the project.

Just as it is about to break ground on new seniors housing units, Bow Valley Regional Housing is celebrating a $6 million commitment by the provincial government for phase two of the project.

The provincial funding announcement was made last week for the Affordable Supportive Living Initiative grant fund and requires BVRH to provide matching funds.

“This is a transformative announcement for Bow Valley seniors and their families, and for BVRH,” said board chair Joanna McCallum. “Right now, many seniors requiring this level of care are forced to leave the Bow Valley. This facility will enable them to remain here, close to their friends, families and local supports – this announcement benefits everyone.”

Currently, BVRH is about to begin construction of phase one of its This is Home project, which is comprised of 63 units – replacing 43 older units at the Bow Valley Seniors Lodge and adding 20 more. Its $15.7 million budget is split between the province and BVRH member municipalities.

The next phase would target higher levels of seniors care than are found in the Bow Valley, as the lodge only offers level two supportive accommodation. Level four care provides supportive accommodation for seniors facing physical frailty and secure accommodation for seniors facing advanced dementia.

“BVRH is pleased with the Government of Alberta’s commitment to seniors. The support from Alberta Seniors and Alberta Health Services will help us provide housing options that are supportive, sustainable and secure for our seniors,” McCallum said. “We are confident the people of the Bow Valley will step forward to help us raise matching funds needed for phase two. This is about keeping families together here in the communities we love.”

Planning for phase two is underway for a 60-unit supportive living facility near the lodge, which was originally built and designed in the ’70s.
