Raising healthy kids video series on CRPS website

A locally made video series advocating literacy and nutrition will be featured on the Canadian Rockies Public Schools (CRPS) website for parents, teachers and students to see.

A locally made video series advocating literacy and nutrition will be featured on the Canadian Rockies Public Schools (CRPS) website for parents, teachers and students to see.

The videos called Raising Our Healthy Kids, were created by Canmore based company Shadow Light Productions in collaboration with Alberta Health Services and Dietitians of Canada and Kay Watson-Jarvis.

Seventy videos have been released (25 translated in French) that feature 60-90 seconds of information to help support a healthy lifestyle for Canadian families.

“The overall goal is to create a resource for parents that was easy and free to use,” said Rachel Gauk of Shadow Light Productions.

Gauk, along with videographer Doug Macleod, presented in front of the CRPS board of trustees on May 25.

According to Gauk, the videos have approximately 35,000 uploads and 16,000 plays.

“(The videos) are easy to access and download, and cover topics like nutrition, preschool and infant care, injury prevention and Aboriginal themes, among others,” Gauk said.

The videos can be found on crps.ca under Programs then Comprehensive School Health.

Watson-Jarvis, a collaborator on the project, says the videos are practical and straight to the point.

“We are grateful for the input of physicians and community stakeholders who made sure our videos were in line with the most up-to-date health recommendations,” she said.

All 70 videos can be found on the Raising Our Healthy Kids webpage on vimeo.com.

“(The) messages are short, concise, simple and familiar, enabling us to easily use them in parenting groups,” said Celia Osenten, a parenting group leader in the Calgary region.

French versions of the 25 nutrition videos can be found at sainealimentationontario.ca in the near future.
