RCMP have identified the person whose remains were discovered near the Banff townsite last August, but are not publicly releasing who it was.
Staff Sgt. Ron Campbell with the RCMP’s K-Division said the cause of death has been determined non-criminal in nature and the family of the deceased has requested the name not be released.
“It is non-criminal and let’s just say the media aren’t too interested in these types of stories,” Campbell said.
He did indicate that the deceased person was the subject of a missing person investigation which would have been known of in the community of Banff.
RCMP were back in the area searching for more remains on Saturday (July 26). The 25-person search party consisted of members from Cochrane Search and Rescue and Calgary Search and Rescue.
Campbell said additional personal belongings of the person were found.
Last August, a human skull was found in a wooded area south of the eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway by two hikers who were in the area and looking for a way through the wildlife fence. It was found approximately 75 metres from the TCH and an RCMP Special Tactical Operations team searched a one square kilometer area and found additional remains.
