A Calgary man was released from court on $20,000 bail Monday (June 20) after the vehicle he was driving was stopped by an RCMP Traffic Services roving unit member and $1.4 million in drugs and cash seized.
Stefan Lelic, 22, was stopped for a speeding infraction on the Trans-Canada Highway on June 14. He was detained and a Parks Canada narcotics detection dog was deployed and positive confirmation of an odour of a controlled substance was made.
Upon further investigation, Lelic was arrested for possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. In all, the search revealed eight grams of marijuana, 23,860 grams of crystallized MDMA and $3,900 in Canadian currency. The estimated street value of the seized contraband is $1,431,600.
Lelic will appear in provincial court again on July 20.
According to the RCMP’s K Division, these drugs, and in their quantity, had they reached communities in Alberta could have had a devastating effect on the health and safety of Albertans.
