Rec Centre naming causes concern

Any name changes for Town of Banff programs, projects, departments or facilities will now have to get council’s official stamp of approval.

Any name changes for Town of Banff programs, projects, departments or facilities will now have to get council’s official stamp of approval.

The decision comes on the heels of Banff’s redeveloped recreation centre being re-named the Fenland Recreation Centre, which came from a selection committee made up of staff and two focus groups representing staff and stakeholders.

The motion came forward from Councillor Leslie Taylor at the May 25 meeting and was unanimously supported by her council colleagues.

When future Town of Banff programs, projects, departments or facilities are deemed in need of a logo or name change, Taylor said the default logo and name should be Town of Banff.

“In general, I believe people like the things that tax money supports to be clearly identified with the municipality,” she said.

“It’s very positive for people to see that the Town of Banff, on their behalf, is providing the services, programs, etc.”

The issue came to Taylor’s attention with the renaming of the Rec Centre.

“My own personal concerns led me to think that when we name something new, maybe council should have a chance to say yes or no,” she said.

Mayor Karen Sorensen voiced support for the motion.

“I don’t see a major concern with having things like that brought to us,” she said.

Taylor said there may be occasions where it is acceptable to not use the Town of Banff name or logo, for example Roam transit, which aims to morph into regional transit.

“I think there are reasonable circumstances where you might consider this,” she said. “But I think it needs to be thought about by the community as a whole and we represent the community.”
