RCMP have arrested and charged an Airdrie man with second degree murder after an investigation was initiated when human remains were found near the junction of Highways 1A and 1X east of Canmore in 2006.

Duane Arthur Redelback, 47, was charged by the K Division Historical Homicide Unit with alleged second degree murder and indignity to a human body, Friday (Sept. 11). The charges are in relation to the death of Redelback’s common law wife, Ruth Degnadice Degayo.

On Jan. 8, 2006, Canmore RCMP members responded to a complaint of human remains which were found burned in an abandoned building near Highways 1A and 1X.

Six weeks after, RCMP announced that DNA testing determined the remains to be those of Degayo, 40, who Redelback had reported as missing on Jan. 8, 2006.

Redelback remains in custody.

"The historic nature and complexities in investigating these types of files is very challenging and our investigators from the RCMP Historical Homicide Unit took on this file with a determination to solve it", said Inspector Stacey Talbot, officer in charge.

"The successes of this unit demonstrates there is no time limit for our investigators in finding out how and why someone was murdered, and to ensure that the responsible person is held accountable."
