Parks Canada plans to develop a skating rink at the Cave and Basin this winter.

Superintendent Dave McDonough mentioned the project earlier in December at the 16th annual planning forum.

McDonough said a highlight of 2013 was re-opening the national historic site after a $13.8 million renovation.

“It has been a huge success story,” he said. “We have welcomed over 80,000 visitors since it re-opened in May, it has won a number of awards and has been accepted into the Canadian Tourism Commission’s signature Canadian experience collection.”

The renovations saw the pool taken out last year. The pool has been closed to public use since 1992.

With a brick pavilion in place, McDonough said the venue can be rented after hours for parties, conventions and meetings and is a revenue generator.

“In January we are going to install a synthetic ice surface so people will be able to skate there, so it adds another dimension for families and parties,” he said. “It is a great way to encourage people to come to the Cave and Basin and the birthplace of our national parks.

“It is a place where we really want to celebrate conservation and what parks are all about.”
