The Rocky Mountain Outlook is nominated for a pair of National Newspaper Awards.

The Outlook team of Tanya Foubert, Greg Colgan and Evan Buhler received the nomination for the local reporting category on a four-part series about the impact of traumatic and fatal incidents in the climbing community in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The series looked at three individual incidents, the toll it took on those involved and the role of the mountain guiding community when fatalities occur.

Buhler, a former Outlook photojournalist, was nominated for the feature photography category for a photo of freediver Lorenza Malaguti in Lake Minnewanka.

After months of research, dozens of interviews, analysis of more than two decades of Canadian avalanche data where fatalities were involved, the series – titled Buried in the Aftermath – examined the role of the guiding community, but also what is being done on the inside to improve and help those who experience such situations.

The series was led by former Outlook editor Tanya Foubert. To read the series, visit the following links (Part 1), (Part 2), (Part 3), (Part 4) and (editorial).

Buhler, who was also the recipient of the 2021 Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award run by the Canadian Journalism Foundation, was one of 10 journalists across Canada recognized in more than one category.

“Evan is far and away one of the best photographers in the country,” said Colgan, the Outlook’s editor. “His ability to take any assignment or photo opportunity and turn it into a breathtaking shot never ceased to amaze his co-workers and those who followed his work in the community. His two nominations are further examples of his strength as a photojournalist and the importance of visuals in journalism.”

The nominations are the first in the Outlook’s 20-year history for the National Newspaper Awards.

The awards will be presented at an online ceremony May 6.

The National Newspaper Awards were created in 1949 by the Toronto Press Club and recognize journalistic excellence in 22 categories. The annual awards honour the top journalism in Canada’s newspaper and digital media industry.
