CANMORE - The playground at one of Canmore's local schools is being replaced thanks to the efforts of local parents to fundraise the money needed to upgrade the structure.

Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy and école Notre-Dame des Monts parents raised $137,500 to create a new capital project for the community to replace the playground structure located at the two schools.

Town manager of public works Andreas Comeau told Canmore council the initiative, which saw support in the community, is only the first phase of the project and would see the structure replaced, followed by installing a rubberized surface in the future.

"The playground was installed in 2006 and normally we wouldn't look to replace a playground until 25 years later. However, we had a very keen and interested parent committee group made up of the two schools," Comeau said. "They felt there would be a benefit to putting in a better playground."

According to a staff report, there were concerns with the size and functional components of the playground. Not included in the replacement are two disk swings and a climbing wall, however.

In order for the project to move forward, council had to amend its 2018 capital budget and approve the new playground. They voted unanimously in favour of the project.
