The Ski Club of International Journalists is in Banff this week for its 58th annual meeting.

Banff Lake Louise Tourism spokesperson Kurt Schroeder said the 200 journalists representing 34 countries and numerous publications is a phenomenal opportunity for Banff.

“From a destination standpoint, any time you have well-vetted, top-line journalists, could be in print or broadcasting, it is a huge win for us,” Schroeder said. “We would expect a multi-million dollar return on investment and exposure.”

The organization was created during the Cold War as a way to transcend political issues through a common interest in skiing.

“It is intended to be a forum and venue where journalists from all over the world and from clashing geopolitical views can meet,” Schroeder said.

In addition to BLLT, Travel Alberta has been key in securing the club’s decision to hold the annual meeting as well as participation of all three ski hills in Banff and the Fairmont Banff Springs, where the delegates are staying.

Schroeder said every day of the event is packed full of activities and it is not all skiing.

In addition to putting runs in at Norquay, Lake Louise and Sunshine Village, the SCIJ will also be at the Canmore Nordic Centre and participate in conference activities like guest speakers, ice walks, photography sessions and culinary excursions, to name just a few.
