Sobeys sale may mean unionization

The sale of Canmore’s Sobeys grocery store likely means when it becomes a Save-On-Foods the staff will also become unionized.

CLAC Local 301 is the union for Save-On-Foods employees in Alberta and issued a press release last week welcoming new employees to the organized labour association.

“CLAC welcomes the employees of the three locations who we anticipate will be represented by Local 301 when the transactions close and the employees commence employment with Save-On-Foods,” said CLAC Alberta provincial director Wayne Prins. “CLAC looks forward to working with these employees to make this transition as smooth as possible, and to assist them as these stores become integrated with Save-On-Foods’ province-wide operations.”

Overwaitea Food Group, which owns Save-On-Foods locations, bought 15 Sobeys stores in Western Canada as a result of an order from Canada’s Competition Bureau.

The bureau ordered Sobeys to divest in 23 stores after it purchased Safeway Canada last November.
