A brand new sport is being introduced this month in the Bow Valley in support of the local SPCA.

A Cani-X – or canine cross – race will debut on Sept. 27 as part of the Bow Valley SPCA annual Rocky Mountain Mut Strut event.

While participants in the Mut Strut can bring their four legged friends for the two kilometre fun walk, the event has opened up to those who want to cross-country run with their dogs in the Cani-X in either a five kilometre or 10-km race.

Organizer Julie Naismith says the event is one of the biggest fundraisers for the SPCA, which was the first no-kill no-cage facility in Canada.

“This year’s Mut Strut will bring a new type of running race to the Bow Valley,” Naismith said. “In this very athletic locale, we are thrilled to broaden the race offerings and expand the field of athletes to include dogs. We know dogs are often recreational running companions – now it’s official.”

The Cani-X is a popular sport in Europe, said Naismith, and has been gaining in popularity in North American. While in Europe the sport is officially regulated, with competitions and leagues, the Bow Valley race is more informal in nature.

“So many people love running and love dogs, so we thought let’s do that,” Naismith said, adding the only requirement is that the furry competitors be leashed and well behaved.

In its third year, the Mut Strut event helps raise significant funds for the local SPCA and Naismith said that wouldn’t be possible without the help of event sponsors as well. With sponsors covering all costs related to the race, she said all funds raised through participating in the fun run or Cani-X will go to help the SPCA’s Campaign for Life that covers a lot of different aspects including its Cinderella fund.

Naismith said the SPCA is “fiercely proud” of its ability to operate as a no-kill and no-cage facility.

“The kill rates across North America are really quite shocking, but thankfully, due to our fantastic support in the Bow Valley, we are able to offer this,” she said. “The money raised really does make a difference.”

This year’s event will begin in Riverside Park in downtown Canmore and will also feature an agility course for dogs and bouncy castle. Participants that raise $25 or more in pledges can register for free in the two kilometre fun walk. Registration for the Cani-X is $40 in advance or $50 on race day.
