Two Calgary men who tried to pass counterfeit money in Banff were arrested in Kananaskis Country after police used a spike belt to disable their vehicle.

At 1:30 a.m., Banff RCMP notified the Canmore detachment that two men who were possibly impaired tried to pay staff at the Banff Park Lodge with counterfeit money before leaving. The pair were driving a Nissan Titan pickup stolen in Edmonton.

Canmore RCMP members attempted to stop the pickup on the Trans-Canada, but the driver refused to stop. Police pursued the vehicle, then laid a spike belt across the highway near the Highway 40 exit at the casino.

The disabled stolen truck continued south on Highway 40 before it was finally stopped about three kilometres north of Kananaskis Village.

The two Calgary men were still in custody as of Wednesday (Aug. 6). They face charges of impaired driving, possession of property obtained by crime and possession of counterfeit currency.

“They had a few bills on them,” said Currie, “and they had a printer with them. It looked like they were making it as they went along and the bills were very poor quality.”
